2. Use time, not looks, as the determining factor. Even if your carpeting doesn’t look horrible, if it’s been 12-18 months since it was last cleaned, it needs it. The more regularly you have carpet cleaned, the more hygienic it will be and the longer it will last. Soil and dirt are abrasive. Each step taken on soiled carpets creates more wear than walking on clean carpet. Likewise, most marks and stains are far more effectively removed sooner rather than later. Regular vacuuming will help, but will not remove all soil. Consider the amount of dust that accumulates on hard surfaces in your home; an equivalent amount also lands on your carpet, providing a breeding ground for the growth of bacteria, fungi, insects etc. By cleaning them you are protecting your flooring investment.
3. When in doubt, clean first, buy later. The life of your carpet depends on many factors, including the amount of traffic through the room, type of carpeting, regularity of care, etc. The Dunns recommend that if you are unsure if your carpeting needs replaced or just cleaned, try cleaning first. You may be surprised by the results and find that a small investment in cleaning will buy you time to look for new carpeting.
